About Crochet
About Crochet Crochet comes from the root word croc, which in the French language means hook. Crocheting is a skill of fabric creation from a thread, cord or other types of cloth materials with a crochet hook.
Some say that the art of crocheting came from some parts of South America, Arabia and China. Although, there has been no real evidence to verify this. It started to be popular in the 1800 in Europe. It is said that the process used in crocheting was around during the ancient times however the hook used in crocheting was not yet available. Back then fingers were used which were bent to be to make loops and chains.
Crocheting, as we know it today began to be seen during the mid 1700s. This was the time when tambour embroidery, reached the European countries. Tambour embroidery was done using a smaller but similar crochet hook. Evidence of crocheting dates back to around 1800. Evidence should have been found in archaeological digs if crochet existed before the 1800s. Claims have been made that crochet pieces can be found in Egyptian tombs and that there were crochet works which were made by nuns to enrich the beauty of churches. Argued over time that crocheting is a very simple technique and it most probably started during the ancient times. The fact is, no pieces have been found to confirm these claims.
Around the 1800s, crocheting was substituted for lace. Laces were quite expensive, turning to was a viable way to create less expensive fabrics. Crocheting did not need lots of equipment and other tools. Crocheting natural fibers and using hooks became popular which were made of brass, ivory and hardwood.
Crocheting became more and more popular, finding its developing into a cottage industry. The craft sustained communities when their life styles were displaced by imperialism. Crochet products were sold to the middle class, or those who were flourishing in society. Fabrics which were made out of crocheting were seen as a mere imitation of the status of wealthy families.
Thread was mainly used for crocheting fro 1800 to 1950. Filet crocheting was widely used along with the crochet in the round. They were worked in rows of closed or open mesh to create patterns. High demand for steel hooks forced mass production and were very popular beginning 1900.
Within the nineteen fifties, crocheters were already using thick yarns to have the ability to create less detailed clothing and fabric. The craft of crocheting using thread was popular as housewives became involved with crocheting throughout the sixties, increasing numbers of people grew to become hooked to crocheting, particularly the more youthful. The most popular designs started to emerge called granny squares. They were in round and incorporated vibrant and fun colors. The youth of the sixties gave crocheting a significantly needed different twist.
Today crocheting is performed using a slip-knot on the hook, which is drawn with another loop. The 2nd loop is drawn through the first and this pattern is repeated to produce a fabric. The chain is woven in rows or turned to produce a pattern. Rounds are made by pulling many stitches through one loop. These techniques distinguish crocheting from other sorts of fabric making techniques.
Crochet considered to still be a new craft if you compare it with other fabric-making methods. It has been through several evolution steps to get to be the art which we all know nowadays. Using the creation of different technologies and modern methods for making fabric, crochet is at risk of being easily wiped out of its existence. However, you will find still lots of people who love crochet either as a hobby or a side line business and hopefully, these folks will keep it going for decades to come.
